Welcome to "The Gods Are Bored," where we hear tonight of a dreadful bombing event threatening a gentle, benign Goddess whose primary tasks are bathing the nighttime with a silvery glow and shoving water uphill.
The Moon is under attack! Run, Luna! Save yourself!
Don't worry, readers. We at "The Gods Are Bored" have a well-stocked and efficiently run bomb shelter for situations like this. It is staffed by volunteer deities who were themselves victims of violent attack, under the able direction of Turtle Woman.
Luna, we at "The Gods Are Bored" know how traumatized You will be by this dreadful and ridiculous affront to Your celestial greatness! We have a cot ready for you, a clean change of clothing, a kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and band-aids, and -- most importantly -- the sympathetic ear of legions of Your fellow gods and goddesses who've been bombed out, mowed down, plowed under, pillaged, damaged, and defaced.
This moon bombing business was kept secret until now, at least from people like this irate Pagan. I wonder what other deities are on NASA's hit list? I won't be a bit surprised if they pulverize Pluto and call it progress.

I was shocked when I heard this.
WTF?? came to mind.
Hun, I love the Goddess as much as any pagan, but really, look at all those crators and tell me she will even feel that tiny pin-prick that NASA plans to inflict upon her proud, meteor-scared face. There are even footprints on her, and yet she shines on as majestically as the day the first ape with questions of diety first noticed her.
Just be thankful that T. Boone Pickens doesn't want to install a strip mall on her..........
What??? This is the first I've heard of it.
Direct slap to Diana, Artemis...and Hecate.
What I'm having trouble with is the reasoning behind this. Sure, we can tell from the splash a lot about the composition of the moon-just as if we hadn't analysed bits of her for decades, brought back by the Apollo astronuats.
But what will it profit us? If there's water on the moon or not, we still have a load of stuff which needs sorting before this.

As an astronomy/physics kid who once wanted to be an astronaut, I have to side with NASA on this. Granted, it may be unnecessary in the grand scheme of things, but Science has a way of continuing. I was excited to follow this story mainly for the meta-reason that Space Exploration is still not dead.
Our last trip to the moon was long ago, with less sensitive instruments, and the scraps of soil we dug up were not really the same as getting a good shovel-full into the regolith. (consider using a trowel to scoop up garden soil, then extrapolate that to what you'd find trying to put in a fence-post. not -quite- the same is it?
On the even larger more paranoid scale of things, I am glad we are looking at the moon again. Not necessarily to exploit it's resources (which some may claim, and may be true), but as a last-ditch option if ever we need to survive after wrecking this planet of potable water.
Maebius, I see your points, and I usually side with NASA. But I cannot embrace this action. We have wrecked Earth, and now we will wreck the Moon, too. Have you looked at a map of all the space junk that we've dumped in our outer atmosphere? It's horrifying. We destroy everything that is sacred and beautiful in the name of physical science and progress. As a society, we are ignorant to the energies and complexities of the Universe - we're even ignorant that we're ignorant. If it can't be seen and measured by instruments, it has no value and no rights. This is all about mining the Moon - and we're gonna get there before China. It makes me heart sick, thinking of the disrespect.
Ignorant that we are ignorant.......that pretty much sums us up, Gruvkitty!
I'm sure plans for a mall are in the works, THE Michael!
...and maybe a STARbucks. ;)
If they can't pump water from the Potomac-Raritan Aquifer to my spigot without a water main break, I just can't see how they will get potable water from the Moon to the STARbucks. They say they're doing this to test the feasibility of a human colony on the Moon. What on Moon could possibly be worth mining? Please comment and tell me!
Without looking it up, I'll have to say - probably a lot of elements we use in industry. In Africa we're starting to grow bolshy about letting foreign 'investors' strip our countries of our mineral wealth (too late, too late), so I guess industrial civ has to look elsewhere.
But, what jumped into my mind immediately when I read your question, Anne, was Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.
Agricultural supplies for earth?

Here's a video about the 'shooting of the moon'

Helium 3. At least, that's one of the rumors I've been reading. Helium 3 is an isotope used in fusion reactors. Evidently, there is enough Helium 3 on the moon to meet the Earth's power needs for over a thousand years. I have no idea if this is the real reason, but Russia and China also have plans to build a moon base, and word is they're looking to gather Helium 3 too. Water on the moon will make the whole enterprise much more plausible.
That's pretty much my understanding of the "mining the moon" argument also. Energy production, and the raw material to continue it, is the main goal of strip-mining the moon.
I dont' agree with it in the larger scale of things, but I do see the benefit that even if greener heads prevail and we stop the destruction of this planet, we may need to know what drastic measures are even possible if things go too badly.
(I personally am of the mind that a reset back to stone-age is helathy for Earth, but as a human, I don't want ot see it happen to my grandkids either, so half-support any such measures needing to be taken as future triage.)
True, Luna may not have felt this at all. For me, that is not the point. It's the arrogance of the move that just makes me so angry I could scream! What RIGHT do we have to do something like this? Answer? NONE! It's the idea of man dominating all he surveys that just pisses me off.
The same human beings who are "culling the herds" of deer in Kansas because of the 150 human lives (and millions of dollars) lost per year as a result of auto-deer accidents. Of course there is never a mention of the deer loss - which, btw, is 100% when they encounter an automobile. They are using SNIPERS to carry out this massacre against the deer.
Err... sorry. My apologies for my rampage.
Rampages welcome, mead dispensed to all who rant!
