Welcome to "The Gods Are Bored," where we light candles and curse the darkness.

It's 5:15 p.m. It's pitch dark. The nearly full moon shining in the window offers little encouragement.

I hate this time of year. Pardon my use of an expletive, but it sucks.

Call this holiday whatever you want. Christmas, fine. Yule, great. Kwanzaa, you go. Hanukkah, super duper. Solstice, rock on. JUST GET THE DAMNED THING DONE SO THE SUN COMES BACK!

Please.

yup, it is cold and damp! And I love what your mother said about the temple.

I'm not sure "sucks" is an expletive. It isn't even really a proper malediction. The malediction is the implied bit, which you have courteously left unsaid. :)

Hi Anne - great blog!

I am a (celtic) pagan expat living in ye olde Scotlande these past 15 months now...and I gotta say about the time solstice rolled around last year I was getting right twitchy at how early the sun went down - try 3:15 on the 21st. Yes, that's what I said - 3:15 in the AFTERNOON. I'm already popping my melatonins in anticipation, as the sun was right down and the moon well up by about 4:30 today.

Sort of gives you a whole new appreciation of why there are so many winter fire festivals in Scotland...

and yet .. celebration and belief in the rise, and rebirth of sol invictus inflicts us all.

(bit difficult in a different hemisphere, unknown to those who formulate seasonal traditions)

bloody hot in this part of the world. Santa tends to arrive in thongs and shorts, decorated with dry gum leaves.

(the word "thong" has interesting cultural problems .. heh)

Whoo Hooo .. Santa arrives in a thong.

I'm not fond of the short days, being a sun worshiper, but I deal with them pretty well and leave an energy saving light on 24/7.

I'm not willing to travel to where the days are longer, I've done my share of damage to this poor tired planet.

I like the word pagan, God is pagan in a way. Hugs.

Man, these find comments perked me up. And if any of you want to feel the warmth, try Wombat's Waffles in my sidebar and go directly to midsummer while sitting in your chair!

You and I are truly kindred sisters. I hate this frapping time of the year. i just want it over with. This year, my poor, pathetic INTJ self is going to have to spend 5 days at my D-i-L's mother's house w/ 8 other people. I may not make it. I am going to try, but it may turn out to be simply more pleasant and efficient to slit my wrists.

Anne, the worst expletive of all is the S-word. I'm just not ready!

I am with you. I can actually tolerate this until about 2:15pm December 25th and then I'm. so. done. Bring back the blooming sun, already.

And why can't they move Valentine's Day to a nice, warm spring day? Why are we expected to get sexy in crappy, ice-cold February? Wind chill and chapped lips do not bring out the romantic in me.
