SunSmart Solar: A Worthy Cause

We at "The Gods Are Bored" are somewhat reluctant to put commercial breaks in the proceedings. After all, you might just hit the clicker to pass the commercial and then bypass the whole blog right along with it. Every now and then, however, a fundraiser comes onto the radar that is so epic in its worthiness that we pause for a word from our sponsors.

I call your attention to an indiegogo campaign for a product called SunSmart Solar. Check out their page, their video, and their product. I was sold on the thing even before I saw it, feeling for quite some time that what this country needs is small solar generators.

I wish I had some big-time ducats to fling at this fledgling entrepreneur, but alas, all I can do is urge you to check out the SunSmartSolar campaign and decide for yourself. If you feel (as I do) that our biggest energy provider is just sitting there in the sky every day, beaming down upon us, you'll see the merits of SunSmartSolar.

Anne -- thank you so much for calling attention to our fundraising campaign for SunSmart solar. We have a ways to go, but I hope someday you will have one.

will check it out.

Kim, I want one, especially if I am to live on the East Coast indefinitely. We got lucky in Hurricane Sandy, but others went weeks without power, and the storm happened on Halloween. It was cold and icy a long time after that.

I'll certainly let you know when they are ready for sale. In the mean time, we are trying to raise enough money to get started, and it's not going as well as we would like. Lot's of clicks, not so many donations. We are going to re-do our videos and some of the text. If any of you have any good suggestions, we are asking around.

I'm thinking of trying something like this:
You know how everyone is waiting for technology to save us? Well, someone has invented the technology that makes solar much more practical: it takes up much less space, costs less, and still works after dark. But it's at the invented-in-the-garage stage of development -- that is, there is a working prototype, but it needs to be turned into a production model. Haven't you always wanted to recognize the next big thing at the garage stage? Here's your chance!
What do you think of this approach?

I think this is a good one. The Apple computer of solar generators? From a garage to back yards in every hurricane-prone state? Oh, I do have a question. How portable are they? Could they be stolen?

The generator part of the system is in a cart, on wheels, but it's pretty heavy. That version you would keep in your garage or a closet or something like that. If you want to put it outdoors, you get a weather-proof box to put it in (that's the white box in the picture that includes the pole and panels in our video.) That locks, and I guess if you tried hard you could steal the whole box, but it would be bolted to a concrete pad or pylons. Hadn't thought about it so much. We had thought that you'd wheel it out to re-charge your electric car and then wheel it back in, but that's not really necessary if you have a long cord. Or room in the garage for the car (no one has that anymore, do they?)

On the other hand, they are portable enough that we think a disaster relief organization could bring one to a disaster site in a helicopter and use it to make enough electricity to run lights and sterilization in a medical operatory. Plus, there's a company that makes a contraption that pulls moisture out of the air to make pure drinking water, but it runs on electricity. That would be a good team-up with SunSmart in a disaster zone.
