Annie, Annie, Quite Contrary

Does anyone know how to grow a successful pumpkin? I have two volunteer pumpkin vines in my front yard (they're not getting much sun).

These vines are courtesy of Decibel the parrot, who does not eat his pumpkin seeds.

Compost! and then more compost.

I suppose it depends on your definition of 'successful.' Are we talking successful as in that it survives, or successful as in that it grows to become large?

We grew pumpkins way too successfully in our compost heap.
The blue pumpkins were the best, in that they took over the entire compost heap. We were hacking away at pumpkin vines for weeks.
So yes, it seems that compost is the key.
Either that, or a lack of intention to actually grow pumpkins.
